Allergic Skin Rashes

Atopic Dermatitis is also called Eczema, typically a childhood occurrence where the red skin in uncontrollably itchy and may progress into scabs with ooze and blistering if left untreated. These are usually the result of diapers or other external factors common to children. Antihistamines and corticosteroids may be prescribed to counter the itching and irritation.

Allergic Contact Dermatitis usually results when skin comes into contact with certain plants such as pison ivy, and other harsh chemicals found in cosmetics and clothing. Reaction usually occurs 30 minutes after the skin initially comes in contact with the allergen. Irritation blisters and scales usually start to develop at this time. In most cases, the hands are the most susceptible as these frequently come into contact with the allergens.

Urticaria or hives also may result in rashes. Although generally harmless, these types of rashes are raised and red in color, and often occur in batches over a certain area of the body. Hives may be caused by medication and food or bee stings and other insects. The reddish bumps usually last no more than 24 hours, also acute cases can last up to several weeks.
