Fungal Skin Infections

Fungi are moldy, plant-like microscopic organisms called dermatophytes that thrive in moist areas of the body. Fungal skin infections often occur in between skin folds in toes, toenails, crotch and vagina. The infected area often becomes red and flaky, and very itchy. People who live in warm and humid climate are often more at risk for fungal infections.

Fungal infections are not short-lived without proper medical treatment. They may last for weeks and months, and infection will reoccur if clothes and towels are not properly sanitized. Although they are commonly found on the skin, fungal infections also affect the nails and hair.

Nail infections usually results in thickening of the nail bed before the surrounding skin is infected. Avoid public pools and saunas to prevent transfer of infections. Topical creams and ointments often cure nail infections, but further precautions must be taken to prevent reoccurrence.

Hair infections or Tinea Capitis often occur in children. Symptoms include some degree of dandruff and abscess in severe cases. Permanent hair loss is to be expected. The form and severity of fungal hair infections often depend on the type of fungal source of the infection. Fungal infections may be anthropophilic, from humans, or zoophilic, from animals. Fungal growth often occurs within the hair shaft itself. It may also enlarge lymph nodes, so be sure to watch for that.
