Staph Skin Infections

Staph infections are caused by the Staphylococcus bacteria which are harmlessly found on the skin surface and in the nasal lining. But when the skin is punctured and the bacteria are introduced inside the wound opening, the bacteria would then cause an infection. They are common among people with extremely dry skin. When the skin cracks, the bacteria are then introduced to the lower layers of the dermis where it stays and develops varying degrees of infection.

Impetigo, crusted lesions of the skin, folliculitis and boils are all staph infections. Proper diagnosis may be done through laboratory culture of a swab or blood culture. Appropriate administration of antibiotics is the standard treatment of staph infections, with corresponding pus drainage as well as debridement of nectrotic tissue to facilitate quick healing of the affected skin areas.

Staph infections are highly contagious, but prevention is key to keep the spread of infection under control. Keep the infection area clean and covered with sterile gauze or bandages. Keep hands clean by diligent washing with soap and water. Avoid sharing personal items such as towels and clothing. Bacteria in clothes and linen may best be destroyed by sanitizing the laundry through high heat.
